How to choose website and domain hosting

Hosting reviews mostly rank whoever pays the biggest commission. The decisions that actually matter are few, and none of them needs a top-ten list.

Keep the domain and the host separate

Your domain is the address; hosting is the building. Register the domain with a registrar you will never need to leave, and point it at whatever host suits you this year. When the host disappoints, you move the site without touching the name.

The kinds of hosting

• Static or edge hosting — for sites that are files rather than a database. Often free, very fast, nothing to patch.
• Shared hosting — cheap, fine for a small WordPress site, slow when a neighbour gets busy.
• Managed hosting — someone else patches, backs up and tunes. Worth it if the site earns money and you do not want to be the sysadmin.
• VPS — your own virtual server. Full control and full responsibility.

The renewal trap

Introductory prices are real, and they end. Check the renewal price before you sign up, for both hosting and the domain. A cheap first year on a domain can renew at several times the price.

Turn on the registrar lock and keep your contact email current. Most lost domains are lost to an expired card and an inbox nobody reads.
